FAQ

What You Need to Know About International Parcel Delivery

How do I pack my package?

Use plenty of cushioning material to protect your goods from damage during transport. Always use strong boxes to pack the items. Make sure the bottom of the box has additional tape to prevent opening when lifted. Wrap all fragile items individually in bubble wrap or packing paper. If you’re using your own box, you must stick to the following size limits. Any measurement of a box cannot exceed 150 cm (59 inches). Sum of lengths and maximum cross-sectional perimeter must not exceed 300 cm (118 inches)

What is the maximum weight and size of a package?

Maximum weight of a package to most countries is 66 lbs. (30 kg). For detailed information go to the Destinations page, follow the link to your destination country.

I am not sure if I entered the correct weight.

TRT Express will reweigh and measure all parcels once they arrive at our warehouse. If your dimensions are inaccurate, it may result in additional charges.

The size of the package is just as important as the weight. This is because there’s only so much room in the cargo hold on an international flight. If the package takes up a lot of space, the carrier must charge more. If your package’s dimensional weight is more than the actual weight, you will be charged the dimensional weight for the shipment.

Carriers use a simple formula for determining a package’s international dimensional weight. Say that your package is 10” x 9” x 12” and weighs 3 lbs. The carrier calculates the dimensional weight like this: (10 x 9 x 12) \139 = 8 lbs. (7.8 rounded up). You will be charged for the 8 lbs. (not the 3 lbs. actual weight), i.e. you’ll be charged the greater of the actual vs dimensional weight.

How can I ship a package if there is no TRT Express office in my area?

If there is no TRT Express office in your area, you can use TRT Express Online Portal – dedicated to shipping packages internationally from any place in the US. Just register at www.trtexpress.com,  enter your package information, print, and attach a label,  drop it at the nearest FedEx location, and track it on your computer or phone.

What happens if I forget to declare an item in my package?

Always provide a detailed description of all the goods you’re sending.

The value and quantity of each item.

The purpose of the shipment e.g., gift, personal belongings, samples.

If you provide a goods’ description which is vague and lacking in relevant details, then it’s likely your parcel will be delayed in customs as they don’t have the information, they need to process your shipment efficiently.

How do I pay duties and taxes if any?

All types of shipments (including gifts, samples) go through an import clearance process as determined by custom’s regulations in your destination country. The package is cleared through customs based on the type of goods, the value and quantity. You will need to pay customs duty and taxes only if the value of the gift is above a stated local duty-free limit. We can release the package to you upon the full repayment of any duties and taxes.

Does the item in my parcel shipment require an export license?

It is possible. A U.S. export license requirement from the Department of Commerce can be triggered by several important factors specific to your transaction: the actual item (commodity or technology) that will be exported, where it is going, who is going to use it, and what they will be using it for.

How do I know if my shipment needs an export license?

The first step is knowing your item’s Export Control Classification Number (ECCN). ECCN entries are found on the Commerce Control List (CCL) and identify reasons for control which indicate licensing requirements to certain destinations. Other reasons an export license may be required for your shipment relate to concerns about the parties to the transaction and the end use of the item.

How do I get an Export Control Classification Number (ECCN) for my item?

There are three ways to obtain an ECCN: 1. Contact the manufacturer, as they may know the ECCN of the item; 2. Self-classify the item by reviewing the Commerce Control List (CCL);

All ECCNs are listed in the Commerce Control List (CCL)

Does the Department of Commerce regulate all exports?

No, the Department of Commerce does not regulate all goods, services, and technologies. Other U.S. Government agencies have export control responsibilities for regulating more specialized exports.

How do I find out which agency has jurisdiction over the item that I want to export?

Review the regulations and contact the agencies that you believe might have jurisdiction over the item. The BIS website provides contact information for agencies with export responsibilities in file (doc.gov) Supplement No. 3 to Part 730 of the EAR. If you are unsure if your item is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) or the EAR, you may submit a commodity jurisdiction request to the Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls to receive an official U.S. Government jurisdiction determination.
